What you'll do
The first stop may be Oia, one of the most beautiful towns in Greece. Perched on a cliff of the caldera, it is famous for its sunsets, blue domes and as a place for filming movies. A favorite travel destination since 1207, it is considered a picture-perfect town and you may see the famous windmill, the old town and more.
Since this is your tour, you have the choice of how long you will stay at each destination. The next stop may be the Profitis Ilias Monastery. It rests on the highest point of the island at 567 meters. Built in 1711, it offers magnificent views of the whole island and a peaceful respite. Until 1860, the monetary had a powerful impact on the intellectual, economic and cultural life of the island.
On our way to a local winery, we will pass through Pyrgos village. It is built like an amphitheater on the top of a hill and offers an unspoiled example of village life. It is a protected settlement and has the ruins of a Venetian castle that was built for fortification.
We continue our journey to visit wineries where you can taste Santorini’s famous varieties of wine, including Vinsanto, Nychteri and Mezzo. The volcanic soil and climate give the wine a unique taste that has been valued throughout the Mediterranean for thousands of years. Today, it is exported to many countries, and you have a chance to taste it at its source. Just a short walk from the road is Megalohori a traditional village in the heart of the wine growing country. You can relax in a tavern on the central square and enjoy some of the beautiful Cycladic houses with colorful wooden doors and brilliant white churches with bright blue domes.
The tour will take you to Red Beach, one of the most beautiful natural wonders of the island. The red color comes from the iron-rich sedimentary rocks in the cliffs that tower above the beach. It has great snorkeling because there is an abundance of sea life in the shore water. You can sit on the beach or in a tavern built into a cave.
Perissa and Kamari are two seaside villages that have stunning black-sand beaches. These villages are not much frequented by tourists, so you can enjoy the beach without the crowds. There are taverns on the beach and several water sports available.
This is just one example of a day-trip that takes you to several beautiful and important sites on Santorini. Since you can plan your own tour, you may also want to see the archeological sites at Akrotiri. The village offers amazing views of the caldera and volcano as well as a 3,500-year-old Minoan settlement preserved by volcanic ash. It has multi-layered buildings and extraordinary wall paintings. There is a Venetian Castle on top of the hill with great views and bagpipe music every day. There is also a lighthouse nearby which is a good place to take photos and offers a quiet atmosphere. These are definitely sites worth seeing.
